A non-inverter compressor has two states: full power and off. It cools past your set temperature, stops, lets the room warm up, then slams back on. An inverter compressor varies its speed instead, running slowly to hold the temperature it has already reached.
Holding a temperature takes far less energy than reaching it. In a bedroom used six hours a night, an inverter unit typically draws 30 to 40 percent less electricity than a comparable non-inverter unit. At current tariffs that is most of the price difference back within two cooling seasons.
